Area Based Initiative (ABI) Co-ordination

One of the key tasks of the Regional Co-ordination Unit (RCU) is to ensure a greater degree of co-ordination among area based initiatives. This site contains information on many of these, and provides links for you to find out more about them. The site also contains information on a number of programmes which (though often nationwide) are delivered through local partnerships. These face many of the same problems and challenges as ABIs, and where possible are encouraged to work closely with them.

What are ABIs?

ABI Progress Report

A report titled “Review of Area Based Initiatives: Impacts and Outcomes” was published on 5th June 2003 by Barbara Roche. This provides a summary of the progress being made by Departments in implementing the recommendations of the ABI Review. To view the report click here.

ABI Gateway, RCU Case Studies

A series of case studies have been produced to illustrate the work of the RCU/GO network in contributing to the development of proposed initiatives with Government Departments.

ABI Review

The RCU has completed a comprehensive review of existing area based initiatives. Conducted in partnership with sponsoring Departments, the review aims to improve the co-ordination and integration of initiatives and their interaction with other local activities.

The findings of the review were announced by Barbara Roche, Minister of State, on 16th October 2002. Recommendations include mainstreaming particular initiatives; merging others; and creating common funding frameworks for groups of related initiatives. Details of the action plan emerging from the review, and how this will be implemented, are available from the RCU, or below:

Guidance

We have extensively revised our Guidance for Government Departments on developing new ABIs or extending existing programmes. The Guidance outlines the key principles that must be addressed and explains how the Unit will consult the Government Offices as part of the clearance process.
